Broad Gully: Storms and steep ground

What can you do in 70mph winds and torrential rain? Simples! Aim for a valley, flanked by steep faces and sheltered by a giant, leeward coire at the head of it.

With Storm Aidan battering the West Highlands, we postponed our plan to summit Ben Nevis and opted for a wild ascent of Broad Gully. This deep cavernous gully, which leads to the summit of Stob Coire Nan Lochan (Glencoe), was the perfect sheltered objective.

This was no walk in the park. Negotiating steep scree and slippery terrain, the group were very much in the stretch zone – but rewarded with stunning views and the immense awe of looking down a vertigenous gully.

We made it back (soaked to the bone) just 20mins before darkness fell, which was cutting it a little fine. Another fine day out in the glorious Highlands. Excellent effort everyone!
